Sir Gerard Fogg, knight in the Royal Guard of the kingdom of Algonwick, is in love with the King’s only son, Prince Tristan Fysher. The two men carry on a secret, sexual affair and proclaim their undying love for one another, only to have it torn apart by an intruder from the future. A white supremacist named Malcolm, stumbling on a time portal between 2006 and their time of 1456, murders Tristan and escapes to the future.
Sentenced to death for failing to protect the Prince, Gerard is freed by the King’s advisor, Ranulf Godfrey, the one man who knows where to find the murdering Malcolm. The two men travel through time to 2006 to discover the castle they love in ruins and a handsome young researcher named Jon Calder cataloging the artifacts of Algonwick’s forgotten age. Jon, who has never felt as though he fit in anywhere except the ruins of this castle, is the vessel within which resides the soul of the murdered Prince. As Gerard and Jon embark on a journey of sexual discovery more than 500 years in the making, the murderous Malcolm circles ever closer.

Destiny’s Bastard is an amazing tale that walks back and forth through time, bringing lovely images of days gone by. Hank Edwards’ voice is wonderful and suits the 1400s perfectly. The dialogue is great. I adored the plot, where Jon has never felt modern times suited him and he should have come from an earlier time, and LOVED the way he had the chance to travel backwards to the place he really felt was where he should be. If only we could all do that…
The characters are all nicely rounded and well shown, to the point I felt I knew them all as though they were friends by the time I was a 3rd of the way in. I rooted for them, got angry and happy on their behalf, and wanted a happy-ever-after so badly it hurt. Oh, and I hated Malcolm. Just HATED HIM!
He focused only on Bartholomew’s advancing form, searching the knight’s hunched, armored form for an opening as the lance wavered in his grip, its weight straining against his shoulder.
Every night it was the same: the chill of the cave walls, the unrelenting downpour outside, and then Malcolm’s wicked, high-pitched laugh.
A blade of ice seemed to slide into Jon’s gut at the sight of Gerard so distraught kneeling before him, but he held his ground and shook his head.
“I don’t know, Abs. I just know I need to be there in his time, no matter what.”
“...Can’t you tell them what to do to save the bloody castle and just stay here?” (LOL)
For a sexy, blast-to-the-past-and-back-again m/m erotic romance, where the words sweep you away and put you “right there”, I highly recommend Destiny’s Bastard (fab title) as a book worth buying and money very well spent. Bravo Hank Edwards!
