Right from thebeginning the hero, Jonas Becker, was working it for me. He’s big and toughwith a sexy accent, and when the story was in his POV his soft nature shonethrough. I adored his physical description, from scars, callouses and tattoosto the curve of his cock.

Erica is one luckylady, well, apart from her meddling brothers, and she knew what she wanted andwasn’t afraid to get it. She is a very likeable character and I enjoyed knowingsomething she didn’t as the story unfolded.

The plot (set in LasVegas) wasn’t a rollercoaster ride of guesswork, it was fairly predictable, butactually that was just what I wanted and it worked just right. The author has alovely voice, flows seamlessly from scene to scene and when it came down to thenitty gritty she wrote it hot, hot, hot and then turned it up a little bitmore. Great stuff. I devoured this book in one sitting.

Nick is a lovely character and you get thesense of him fighting with his feelings which is refreshing to read. Most heroesknow their feelings straight away.

Overall this is a really goodstory with a great plot and a lovely romance into the twist.

Verdict: Ifyou want a fast-paced story with lots of action in the bedroom, this is thestory for you.

The chemistry between Luke andCallie is fantastic as it moves the story along and the claiming was one hotscene. Every aspect of this book was brilliantly written and thoroughlyenjoyable.

Her style and voice are exquisite—some maythink that a rather lofty word, but you’ll know exactly what I mean when youpick up this book. I haven’t read any of her other works but plan to now. I’m so incredibly lucky in now having 3 favourite historical authors on mylist, and all of them have hit the top spot here with The Golden Nib Award.

Ms Blackthorne’s attention to detail, rightdown to how she uses certain words and phrases, pleased me. To know she has soobviously researched and studied made me feel that she values giving herreaders a close-to-exact representation of the era as she can. Superb images,wonderful emotions stirred, and a wish that I’d read this book in one sittinginstead of sleep so rudely demanding I visit the Land of Nod. I didn’t want togo there, damn it, and each night this week I’ve fallen asleep with my ereaderin hand because I didn’t want to give in and actually put it down and admit Icouldn’t stay awake to read more. But I would have done if I could. I wish I’d managedan all-nighter.

The characters are well-rounded, very well explored, and their emotionswere displayed so that I never had to wonder how they were feeling. MsBlackthorne covered all her bases, and again I was grateful. This is a veryemotion-laden tale—perfectly so—where I was drawn in, sucked under, andwandered through that time and their lives as though I belonged there and wasone of them. The characters became important to me, were my friends, and that, I feel, is down to the mark of atruly exceptionally talented writer.

Emily has suffered with and survived thefever. It’s made her thinner than usual but no less feisty. She knows what shewants after being made to live how her grandmother thought she should—sheltered,away from society for the most part—away from people in general. She’s beenschooled so isn’t your average historical heroine, and she’s ready to breakfree and try her real self on for size and see if she likes how it fits. Forcedinto making her own money, she goes to the Blue Duck and offers herself as anemployee—and it wouldn’t be just waiting tables. She’s prepared to give herselfin the most private way if it means keeping a roof over her head and gettingher precious book that she’s been working so hard on, published.

There, she comes face to face with a nastypiece of work in the form of a ghastly male who accuses her of stealing hismoney. She hadn’t, but our gorgeous hero, Alexander, steps up to fight for her.Their paths are set, destiny taking things out of their hands, and they embarkon an affair. This is as far as I will go in revealing plot—it’s too good abook for me to spoil it. Read it for yourself.

I would, however, like to talk about Alex. He’sgot skeletons in his closet preventing him from fully letting go and lovingEmily in the way he wants to—and God, he wants to. Those skeletons, though,they dance, jangling their bones every time he gets too close to her, and hepulls back, reminding himself of why he can’t be with her. I hoped there wouldn’tbe some big hoohar about those skeletons only to find they weren’t anythingmuch at all, and I wasn’t disappointed. I understood his reasoning of why hecouldn’t open his heart and felt very sorry for him over it. He is adorable,and watching his internal struggle was both heart wrenching and pleasurable ina perverse kind of way. I wanted him to get over things, to give Emily a properchance, and even though I knew they would get together in the end, there was apart of me that stood on the will-they-won’t-they tightrope and feared I’d falloff, devastated that they didn’t get their happy-ever-after. But all goodthings come to those who wait, and I was prepared to wait as long as it took toget my HEA fix.

Best Bits: The whole damn book. Every singlelush word, scene, character and emotion they inspired.

Verdict: This has honestly been one of thebest historical books I’ve read. It’s no secret that I love reading this genreand when I discover a true talent in this area I love to shout about it, so getyour ear plugs in if you have sensitive eardrums because I’m about to roar.

Immediately, just the period of the short story transported meback to my high school days, those wonderful days when I always found myselfimmersed in Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland. Only Ms. Blackthorne’soffering was much more titillating and sexy than any of the prim and propernovels by her predecessors.

Grey Sexton, the hero—or would you dare call this sexy aristocrata hero?—was the most controlling, out-of-control, gorgeously outrageous packageof masculine arrogance I ever wanted to bed.

Pair him with beautiful Beth McConnell—a lady who is very much not a lady—and you have the mostdelicious, hot, hot, hot chemistry between hero and heroine I’ve read in quitesome time.

No plot telling, remember? But I will tell you the contrastbetween them is sumptuous dynamite. Dark, light; virile, feminine; rich,not-so-rich; big, small. Smoldering.

The sex scenes are indescribably arousing. Particularly a scenewith a costly pearl necklace. I’ll say no more about that, only to promise this little feast of amor is steamy, steamy,steamy.

Without revealing plot, I have to at least gush about the humor inGrey Sexton’s struggle to corral and master this little feisty tease of a girlinto being his well-paid—very well compensated—mistress is adorable and myheart hurt for his frustration.

You’ll have to read it for yourself to see if our handsome, sexyman will succeed in his conquest to dominate beautiful Beth. Or will the tablesturn on his good-looking ass?

Trust me. This short story is a must-read. Cute, hot-as-hell sexyand lovely, eloquent prose to boot.

This is packed full withinformation and instead of slowing the story down it speeded the storylinealong. The sex and heat are very much part of the story and set the scene forthe rest of the Outlaw brothers books.

A quickie but so worth thetime.

Beth isa shy, insular character, mousey and day-dreamy, and she is married to a big,ex-hockey-playing hunk of gorgeousness called Gavin. (Yes, I’m swooning as Ithink of him). But Beth spends a lot of time in her head, torn between thestrict upbringing her mother subjected her to and deliciously dark thoughts ofsubmission and allowing her sexual side to be set free.

So it isno wonder Gavin is at the end of his tether. He loves his wife with all of hisheart, and it was her demure character that attracted him to her in the firstplace. But enough is enough, he can’t go on not feeling like he really possessesher and trying to hold back the carnal cravings he keeps locked inside. He needsto see into her soul, really connect with her on every level. Be together inevery sense of the word.

It is acombination of things that spurs both characters into action and I adored theway Ms Bell used the erotic photograph as a catalyst to spark the story. Itstayed a central part of the plot and I have to say I can visualise it in myhead very clearly.

The wayin which Beth and Gavin reached out to one another tugged my heart strings. Attimes they were tentative and shy, even though married, at other times, daring,and laying their hearts on the line for one another. I liked that they didthat, because as a reader I got to see them stepping out of their comfort zonesand the effect it had on them. Sometimes it surpassed their expectations, othertimes there had to be a ‘hang on a minute’ moment. It was all so real, soerotic and ultimately so wonderfully entertaining.

Thesecondary characters were just delicious. Shall I say that again? Deliciouswith a capital D. I am talking about more hockey hunks, naked, aroused,salivating. And of course, then there is Eagle, a mysterious skater who, by theway, I would happily be his ‘cabin slave girl’ for a long weekend – oh yummytimes would be had!

Best Bits:

With her, he was always meticulouslyrestrained, although sometimes she caught a flash in his dark eyes or aruthless curve of his mouth that reminded her what a physical creature lurkedinside. Not like her. She was locked away in her own head. At some point she’dthrown away the key.

“I’m a man. I’m always in the mood formeat.”

“So are you going to play the Nasties?”

Theplot was erotic, with Adelaide partaking in both lesbian and heterosexual encounters.She was a lovely warm protagonist, sensual and with just the right amount ofconfidence and vulnerability. Her desires were shown on different levels andshe grew with her experiences as the tale unfolded. At times I guessed wherethe author was heading with the story at others it took me by surprise. But italways flowed along at an easy pace with the secondary characters adding depthto the story and I certainly had a soft spot for her father.

Best Bits: “WhenDaisy first walked into the drawing room, her loveliness made our ornatefurniture seem lackluster.” From the very first line I knew I would enjoyOrchid Pink

“Myupbringing was a tight corset and though Ruth Carroll had loosened the stays, Istill felt I was beguiled by the devil’s violin.” An example of the deliciousdescription of Adelaide’s emotions.

“Mybad girls were always a joy to me.” Adelaide referring to her orchids.

“Accordingto Ruth, gentlemen often visited prostitutes if they required such a treat. Didthat mean, as a wife, I wouldn’t be required to take Thomas’ knob between mylips? Perhaps it was considered such a sin that only street walkers wereconsidered fit to perform it.”

Theway Thomas spoke of Adelaide’s sexuality as a third person. It said a lot abouthis view of her.

Verdict: Orchid Pink is a high quality historicalerotic romance that I’m sure will appeal to many readers. The standard ofwriting was top notch, the use of the English language a delight. If F/F isyour thing with a bit of M/F thrown in, and you enjoy a trip back in time thisshould definitely be on your TBR list.

Anton is aroused by Shannon and she fights him to begin with until she realises her attraction for him.

Laurann Dohner, combines heat with an amazing plot and characters you will fall in love with. I adored Anton and his instant reaction to Shannon. I loved this story so much I didn’t want it to end. In fact, as I saw I was getting to the end I tried to slow my reading down. Didn’t work. I was so enthralled by the story as it gripped me from the very beginning.

I found myself chuckling as Shannon tries to climb everything when she’s scared and the way Anton has to talk to convince her to come down. Superb writing, wonderful book and one that will not disappoint.

Can’t wait for the next installment.

What do you like bestabout writing?

The creativity. I've channeled creativity intocrafted projects and flower arranging, and now I write lives for other people.

There are stories aplenty to be told, differentsettings, characters with strengths and desires. I can't imagine not writingand letting all those stories go by the wayside.

When didyou start writing?

I have written since I was in grade school. I wasalways creating stories, but most for assignments and my own amusement. I wroteweekly articles for my hometown newspaper, reporting on events at my school,plays, awards, etc. I even wrote articles for a bowling league for which Iserved as secretary during my high school years.

I've kept a journal for many, many years and havechronicled the life of our youngest child from before conception to today andshe's 27.

On the creative side, I've always writtenfanciful stories, created characters that were not only outrageous but everyday people. However, I had never decided to write for publication because Ididn't know what I would write that anyone would care to read.

When I discovered romance novels a few years ago,I knew that was what I wanted to write and that's what I'll continue to write.My love of history only sweetens the pot.

Are you aplotter, or do you fly by the seat of your pants?

A bit of both.

Do you likeedits?

Editsare a necessary part of writing and I've had good ones and horrible ones. I'vegotten less thin skinned about them, but it's never easy to have a dispassionateperson tell you what's wrong with your story or why it doesn't work for them.

Thebest editor is one that truly wants to teach you something and does it in a waythat is palatable. I've had editors who've called my characters not so nicenames and said things like, "WTF were you thinking when you wrotethat?" That isn't something that I can live with, sorry about that.

Aneditor I greatly respect told me that "The natures of editing is mostlynegative." I understand that, but it doesn't have to be done in a negativeway. Respect on both sides makes it a much easier process and keeps feelingsfrom being hurt on both sides.

Theedits I get the most out of are the ones where I learn something along theway—something I can apply to future stories. I maintain that authors wouldn'tget so bent out of shape if editors were less like the Gestapo and more peoplewho want to help and not ride rough-shod over the author and the story.

Fatefulwords for me are "This didn't work for me," and "The beginningjust didn't grab me by the throat." Not all stories work for everyone orgrab you by the throat, but to have an editor look at the story like thatsomehow strikes me wrong.

Have you ever co-authored? If not, would you everconsider it?

I don'tthink I'm ready to co-author anything, to be honest. That entails a tremendousamount of trust on both parts, as well as a certain degree of loss of control.

Characterswould necessarily be subject to both author's use of them and each author feelsvery territorial about their creations. Egos are fragile. Too many timesco-authoring has destroyed friendships.

What's yourfave genre?

I love historical romance, either het or m/m,writing and reading. I love the Regency era, but I've found I enjoy readingjust about every historical period out there, from the American West toMedieval.

Are thereany genres you'd love to try buthaven't had a chance to tackle?

I've written contemporary, m/m and m/f historicaland ménage. I can't think of anything else I'd rather write. Somehow, I don'tsee myself writing about fairies or droids, so I guess the simple answer is, Ithink I've found my niche. J

What's yourfave writing accompaniment? Tea? Coffee? Large slab of chocolate cake withpretty sprinkles?

Actually, my puppy, Fiona, is my favorite accompaniment.She lays next to me and cuddles close. She makes me smile and makes the tea,coffee and cake taste so much better. J

If you could go anywhere in the world, money noobject, where would you go, who with, and why?

Hands down, it would be England. (Emmy says: Come and visit me when you're here!) Most of mystories are set in England and I'd love to visit the places I write about.

Years ago, I visited Scotland, but time waslimited and England was out of the question.

I would only travel such a distance with myhusband and if we went without our youngest daughter, she'd skin us alive. Itwould be a wonderful trip, as we have friends to visit and so many places tosee.

One Thou shalt begin allnovels with thy heroine awakening and dwelling upon her life and her lack offuture prospects. Thou shalt create great reader empathy if she be aware of herloneliness.

Two Thy heroine shall, atthe earliest opportunity, reflect at length upon her own countenance in anyavailable reflective surface. Six Should thy heroinearrive at her home to find the door ajar, she shall not use her cell phone tosummon the police and await their arrival. Nay, she shall enter the premisesunarmed save for the words, "Hello? Is anybody there?" because allmalefactors are compelled by those magic words to announce, "Run! ’Tis I,thy evil stalker ex, come to kill thee.”

Seven Should thy heroine befleeing for her life and such flight taketh her into a room she hath not seenbefore, even the most fleeting glance shall allow her to describe the room'sdecor in detail, especially the richness of the drapes.

Eight Thou shalt not suffer anynoun to go unmodified, nor shall any verb want for an adverb. Whereverpossible, thou shalt modify adjectives with the adverbs “very” or “extremely”.

Nine Thou shalt describepersons, places, and other items in great detail though they have no truebearing upon thy story as they shall be deemed to addeth colour. Also, thoushalt insert large portions of backstory into thy opening chapter and includeALL research within thy novel.

Ten Thou shalt considerevery word, even unto the smallest, to be sacred and steel thyself against thetemptation to edit that may be held out to thee by false prophets of grammar,character motivation, and story structure.

And onefinal bonus commandment: Immediately upon completion of thy firstdraft, thou shalt prepare an email addressed “Dear Agent,” and send it far andwide throughout the land with thy wondrous novel attached.

I’m in love with him—yes, still in love with him eventhough I finished reading a couple of days ago. He’s strong, he’s so macho, yethe’s caring and soft at the same time. Wonderful traits. I loved the images Igot of him, all vampirey—which isn’t surprising since he is one—but the visualsI were so yummily vampire (thatbrooding feel you get from them) that I got a bit short of breath every time hewas on the page.

The plot is a goodone. There are vampires, wolves and other beings, and the world-building isvery cool. There are things going on mere humans have no clue about, and thissense of underworld/otherworld happenings gave the tale a sharper edge for mebecause I imagined those vamps and shifters and magical people really living inour world and how we might not have a clue they’re there. Yup, this book reallygot me thinking about that.

So, if that’s thecase and it wasn’t my imagination but some superpower letting me know thesepeople really do exist…Rooooooo-beeeeert! Where are youuuuuu? I’m here! Comeand find me, vampy baby!

Oh, I forgot.He’s in love with Sophie.

Verdict: A great start to what I imagine is goingto be a great series where everyone is intertwined.

It’sone of those books where you’ll smile at discovering such a great find, thensit back and drown in it. Honestly, it was like that for me. Super-talentedauthor, a very well-written book, and I seriously cannot wait for her next tale. She’s in my notebook of auto-buy authors.Yes, she’s that damn good!

Best Bits: It’s difficult because the whole book isgood. I particularly liked the description of how Vanessa looked and moved, howshe was this glamorous woman that was such a big mass of trouble but Harrycouldn’t resist her.

Verdict: Out of this world. A highly enjoyablestory that left me wanting more, more, more!

Article and Competition: What's My Ideal Job? by Anne Brooke

I’ve had a lot of different jobs inmy time, believe me. I’ve been a cleaner for an architects firm (fun, buttotally mad), a helper in an old people’s home (not as frail as you mightimagine) and a parish volunteer for my local church attempting to provide somekind of connection between the parishioners and the new vicar. Now, there was achallenge.

In terms of my more permanent work,I’ve been involved in insurance claims, both accident and motor – which wasvery much being the proverbial square peg in a round hole as, with all the willin the world, I am simply not cut out for anything financial. From there, Imanaged to escape and end up in the Higher Degree Examinations department inthe University of London. I have very fond memories of that job and, so manyyears on, count one of the women I met there as one of my closest friends. Mindyou, with students every day could be different – I remember having to ring aparticular professor at 10pm UK time from home whilst he was carrying outresearch work in a warzone in order to ask him about one of his tutees. I thinkhe was jolly pleased to have a bit of light conversation really, rather thanhaving to dodge bullets. Not only that but one of the other professors whoworked along the corridor used to bring his basset-hound in regularly as ithelped him to concentrate. Ah those were the days. I’m not sure you’d get awaywith it now.

After that, I ended up working asAdmissions Officer for a local college – which was something of a challenge asthe last one had left under a cloud so all the lecturers were very suspiciousof me on principle. Can’t say I blame them though – as I’m obviously a verydodgy type. Still, in the end, they warmed to me, I think – though they seemedmuch happier when I was promoted to be Timetabling Officer and therefore moreunder their control, bless ’em.

Escaping, temporarily, from theworld of education, I spent eight years – the longest I’ve ever been in onejob! – working as a secretary for an IT consultancy, where I met another goodfriend, and perfected my You want it when?!? expression. Always avaluable skill. I also developed a lifelong hatred of quality administrationand archiving …

Finally, I ended up where I am now –working as the PA to the Director of Student Support at my local university.It’s taken a while to get to this position (ah, these dizzy heights …), butactually I really enjoy it. It gives free rein to my desire for control (say nomore) and for developing my deep technical knowledge of the photocopier (thoughif anyone does know how to replace the wretched staple cartridges,please do let me know as it remains an unsolved mystery in my life). The othergreat joy about this job is that it’s part-time for three days a week, so I canwork at the university from Monday to Wednesday, and then concentrate on mywriting career on Thursday and Friday. For me, that’s the perfect balance, as Idon’t think I could work full-time at the university, because all those charactersI carry in my head would get even more impatient than they are now; but at thesame time, I couldn’t ever be a full-time writer partly because (a) I don’tmake nearly enough money to do so; and (b) it would probably drive me mad. Ineed some kind of realistic grounding to keep me sane. Relatively sane, thatis.

However (and – at last! – getting tothe point), in the midst of all this, I’d still probably give it all upif someone could wave a magic wand and make me into a ballet dancer. How I longto be that elegant and graceful, and to float across the stage as a swanprincess, or any other kind of princess, wearing those wonderful flowingdresses and being part of the fairytale of dance. Oh I wish. Alas, the onlytime I’ve ever come near to that dream is the ballet lessons I took when I was5 years old. A career in dance which was sadly brief as I knelt on a splinterin the sixth lesson and cried so much that I wasn’t allowed back into class.Ever. Yes, today I may have the elegance and glamour of an elephant having abad trunk day but I still think I was robbed. Anyone for a pirouette?

I completely adored the narrative, how ourheroine adored Ethan, his looks, his bedroom skills, but not his conversation.She was brutally honest and I laughed out loud, completely relating to some ofthe comments. That’s not to say it isn’t sexy as hell, it is, and I wouldhappily have an Ethan as well as an Avery!!

Verdict:Two hot short stories perfect for reading on a coffee break. You won’t bedisappointed but you might squirm on your seat!

The introductions complete, George leaves Emily inpeace to get on with her job. But when a falling photograph sets off a chainreaction of ghostly events, Emily and George are thrown together in order tofind out who—or what—is causing them. Their investigation uncovers a tragicpast, a lost love, and a stunning secret.

This was a clever story,a good length and great characters. Westbury Manor was a wonderful setting forthis supernatural tale and I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions of thelocation.

Emily was very likeableand I certainly went on the journey with her. Her work, her fear and herattraction to George – phew, he’s a hottie!!

I enjoyed the wholeincident with the photograph, and the references to the war. It seemed like Iwas reading two stories in one, in two different time zones. Which judging bythe title is what the author intended. She certainly achieved it.

Emily stroked a thumbacross the glass, just where his face was. It was an unconscious move, but whenshe’d done it, Emily wondered if deep down she was hoping to make him feelbetter.

I wondered when another Golden Nib book would come our way—and here it is! A Ghost Story ticked every box for me and left me wanting more, wishing it would go on forever. It starts off in the past, and let me tell you, the writing and voice is out of this world. I settled down thinking it was an historical, loving every minute of it, but it switches to contemporary. And there we have another treat, another side of J.P. Bowie’s talent. The contemporary voice was different but no less excellent—very British, so if you like the English way, this is definitely the book for you.

The historical opener drew me in. I was right there, readers! I saw the gathering, felt the spite emanating off a certain person, and wanted to read more about this section of the tale. The characters are delightfully real, a big splash on the page. At this point I’d to say a historical by this author would be at the top of my wish list, hint hint!

Jamie and Kevin (contemp characters), along with Jamie’s adorable mother and sweet niece, are a set of characters who also came alive while I was reading. I loved the way Jamie’s mother didn’t bat an eyelid that Jamie is gay—it was nothing to write home about at all for her. The instant chemistry between Jamie and Kevin is a joy to experience, and wanting them to get together is a strong pull on the heart strings.

The later scenes where the spirits battle is gripping, and the explanation as to why Kevin and Laura can see and hear spirits is sad yet understandable.

Best Bits: The historical introduction.

Verdict: One word: stunning. Actually, here are two more: buy it!

Meadow goes home forthe weekend with her boyfriend Killian Rand. Their relationship has changed astheir natural roles have come forward. Meadow is an alpha female while Killianis a lower-ranking member but is still the son of the lead alpha of his pack(following me?).

Meadow and Keefe (Killian’s father) end up going headto head in a battle over a tuft of hair in a place—I don’t want to spoil allthe details. After some more fights and an argument between Killian and Meadow,it becomes clear Keefe and Meadow are now mated.

Now, some people may find this objectionable becauseof the relationship with the son and then the father, but rest assured GwenCampbell makes it clear that even though the son is upset, he did it onpurpose. There are some steamy hot love scenes. I wished there could have beenmore of a fight between Keefe and Meadow. Overall, it is an interesting story.

Best Bits: Where Meadow and Keefe are arguing and he claims herfor his own.

Verdict: Interesting premise and Ms Campbell delivers to makethis an interesting and hot read.

Surprise Patrick with afoursome. Not only do all of them have a foursome that starts with a game ofstrip twister, this is highly erotic and the author certainly works out themechanics really well. I liked that the characters didn’t grow extra arms and legs.

Always Room for Four is a great read and the characters are fun and the foursome worked outreally well.

Best Bits: Thefoursome scene. It was hot and well worth the time to get to it.

Verdict: Veryerotic. Be warned, this books is scorching!

Hello, and welcome to Miz Love! How long have you been writing?

I have always been a writer. In my school days, I loved doing essays and short stories. However, as an adult, I actually began started writing my first novel in September of 2010, so a little over a year.

What prompted you to start writing?

My husband and I went to Sturgis and I was browsing the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and came across some information about some very fascinating women who rode their motorbikes across the U.S. in 1916. I said to my husband, “I need to find a book about these chicks!” Well, there was no book about those chicks so I said, “I’m going to write one!” And I did. LOL. It became Ride for Rights, due out in February of 2012.

How often do you write?

Not as often as I would like as I have a full time job. I don’t have a set schedule. When an idea comes to me, I tend to work on it in every spare moment, feverishly. When it’s done, I may go a few months without writing a thing till another idea hits me.

Where do you get your ideas from?

All my current and upcoming books are different genres so my ideas come from all kinds of things. I get ideas for historical novels while traveling to historical sites. A Facebook Affair came to me when I joined the website. My memoir is simply my own experiences.

What part of the publishing process do you like the best?

I actually like doing edits. Though frustrating at times, I see my work improving before my very eyes and it gives me a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.

How do you feel when you receive your covers?

Like any author… must post it on Facebook and blog and Goodreads and tell everyone about it. LOL It makes the book feel “real” at last.

Are you anxious about reviews?

No. I have been a book reviewer for five years and thus, I expect there to be bad as well as good reviews. I think authors should read their negative reviews and honestly give the reviewer’s criticism some thought. Without criticism, you can’t improve. I have also learned that what one reviewer doesn’t like and points out may appeal to others rather than put them off.

Which genre are you most comfortable writing?

I love writing short stories and injecting some humor. Also women’s fiction.

Are there any you have yet to try?

Mystery. I haven’t done a mystery yet. That’s pretty hard to lay out. I’m rather intimidated by the idea… all the facts to keep straight…

What works do you have in store for us lucky readers in the future?

My historical YA, Ride for Rights, is due out in February of 2012 and a Christmas story, Operation: Enduring Santa is due out in December of 2012.

If you could go anywhere, any time, and money was no object, where would you go, why, and who with?

Any time?? America, World War II. It was an amazing time to be a woman as we were finally accepted in male dominated professions. I would have loved to live during that time and experience that… to be a trailblazer for the women of today.

Franny manages to work her way into the hearts ofPhillip’s friends until finally she penetrates the ice around his heart andgets into his. Temporary Mistress isa lovely story and one I didn’t want to stop. Franny and Phillip are wellwritten and their romance beautiful.

Best Bits: Theentire book. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit.

Verdict: Wellwritten, addictive and highly enjoyable. One of the best reads of 2012 so far.

The Wilder Brother by Suz deMello

Now this story keptme gripped from the first page. Twin sisters but totally different. Nicolevisits her sister and is bored one night and bets Dana’s fiancé, Max, wouldn’tbe able to tell them apart. Not wanting to do it but forced into it, Danaagrees. While Nicole is out with Max, his brother and Nicole’s one-timeboyfriend, Colton, turns up at Dana’s apartment and takes her out.

Colton Wilder couldtell the twins apart even if it was down to body size. I liked how he lovedDana’s body shape and became addicted to her. This is not an instant love atfirst sight but more a growing love that happens throughout the story and isbelievable. I thought the way Suz deMello worked out Nicole and Max’srelationship that intertwines with Colton and Dana worked really well.

Overall I foundmyself falling for all four characters and loving the way it worked in orderfor them all to have a happy ending. Colton is definitely my favourite of thetwo brothers.

Best Bits: When Colton begins to realise hisfeelings for Dana, and most of his sexual reactions to her.

Verdict: A fun and hot read that will keep youengrossed from the first page.

The men enjoy and find deep pleasure in sharingtheir women with one other man from the club, essentially threesomes. There arerules which surround sharing and I love the way Lora Leigh has produced men whorespect women and the main basis is to love and protect their women fromscandal.

This is arelatively short story but it does pack a mass of emotion. Tess is like mostyoung women who are unsure of their sexuality and being with Cole excites andscares her. The chemistry between these two characters is explosive and thebanter enjoyable. The face-off Tess goes through with her mother made me feelsorry for Tess and delighted when Cole stood by his woman.

Overall a reallygreat read.

Best Bits: I’d have to say the mother/Tess/Cole face-offat the end. Very well written.

Verdict: Emotional, hot, steamy and thoroughlyenjoyable.

Welcome, Miz Love readers. I’m RhiEtzweiler. Today marks the release of “Blacker Than Black” and Miz Love invitedme over to talk about the book.

Writing a story is very much an art form.The medium is different, words instead of paint or clay or metal. Some authorsfind success in breaking it down into a formula with variables, swapping valuesand churning out books. For me, it’s like writing music, perhaps becausethey’re both read—in this, the musician is the audience. The act of reading shouldcreate a symphony in the mind.

Each story demands a different octave, adifferent cadence, rhythm, and beat. I have a variety of tools in my arsenal. Choosingwhich ones fit a given story can be tricky. Sure, there are a number ofbest-selling authors within the dark/urban fantasy genre that employfirst-person. It’s tricky, though. The character presentation requires care andattention to translate into reader immersion and engagement, as opposed tosimply “the easy way out” as some call it.

I disagree with that “easy” label. Noaspect of “Blacker Than Black” was easy. Not the first-person POV, not thepresent tense, not the world-building, the plot arc, the climactic sequences,the resolution. Every single moment spent writing this novel was a labor. LikeWolfgang Amadeus slaving over ‘Requiem in D Minor’, it was a labor of love andpassion. I shed the blood, sweat, and tears because more than anything I wantedevery word and sentence to be perfect.

But then, it’s not just an urban fantasystory told in first person, present tense.

It’s all that, with a narrator who obscuressex and gender identity, who only knows the events of the past in sweeping,broad brushstrokes. Without any meaning from a political or cultural standpoint,or the way they’re presented in the annals of history, never mind the finerdetails of the truth that lie in the greyer areas of actual events.

The reader learns all this as the narratordoes, piece by piece uncovering a jigsaw puzzle from the rubble and the dust.

But the story would be destroyed if evenone aspect were altered. If any tool were substituted for another. The Englishlanguage is funny like that. It’s difficult –I would say impossible—to presenta story with a gender-obscured narrator in third person without resorting togender neutral pronouns. Those pronouns would’ve been constant flags,counterproductive. “Blacker Than Black” is designed to encourage assumptionsabout the narrator. It leads the reader down a path of discovery.

That discovery is not something everyreader will appreciate or enjoy. I’ve already accepted that. The story wouldn’tbe what it is if I hadn’t employed the tools I did, though. To change any oneof them would have weakened what it was meant to be, what the muse wanted it tobe when Black first began sharing the story with me over five years ago.

If told in third person, past tense, forinstance… Black’s story would just be yet another urban fantasy story aboutvampires and the humans they subjugate. And though I’m biased, I think you’llagree it’s a great deal more than just that.

This is one book in the series you don’t want to miss.The chemistry between Evan and Catalina is seriously hot. I love how shemanipulates him to feel her up and they end up having some steamy sex in hisoffice. Over the course of their sessions together they both find they’refalling in love with each other. However, when Evan finds out about herdeception and throws it in her face, her reaction is written so wonderfully.The tears, the pain, are felt by the reader.

This is by far my favourite book of the Reyes family.All these books can be read as standalones but I think reading them as a seriesmakes the reader connect with the characters so the story telling is more heartfelt.

Best Bits: The is another full story for me. From the beginningto the end, I highly recommend reading it all.

Verdict: The best one in the Reyes family series so far. Wellworth the time getting to it.

Verdict: Fun and sassy and a trip into a couple’s bedroom as they confess ‘forbidden’ desires. Well worth picking up and losingyourself in and then hunting out more by this talented writer.

Best Bits: Caroline’s whole personality was so sublimely wicked in a teasing, sexy way it was delightful, as a reader, to meet her.

In hopes of eventually publishing a bookabout his experiences at the Quik-Mart, Josh has decided to start keeping awork diary of his times on the night shift. Here is one random page.

11:55 - Arrived at work to find Carinasubbing for Julia. Seems no one can find her, although one of her friends saidsomething about a bachelorette party in Reno. We’re hoping she’s not deadand/or in prison. I don’t tell Carina, but I know there’s worse things.

12:08 - First creature of the night. Avampire woman who bought Gatorade and Twinkies and asked me if there was anyonegood to eat around here. I didn’t know what to say, so I just pointed hertowards the McDonald’s.

12:37 - A zombie came in, one that seemedclumsier than most, and his arm just fell off! Oh my god it was so gross! Hejust bumped into a shelf after getting his burritos, and there was this wetpopping noise, and his right arm just hit the floor. So sick! I know we’resupposed to act like it’s nothing so we don’t embarrass the customers, but thatcaught me off guard. The zombie didn’t notice - me being grossed out, and hisarm coming off. I guess zombies don’t feel anything.

12:40 - Cleaned up the arm. I wore rubbergloves and put it in a thick garbage bag, but it was so sick I felt likebathing in Purell. Put it in the Dumpster and hoped the garbage men didn’tnotice it.

12:42 - Oh holy crap - if the werewolvesget in the Dumpster, they won’t eat it, will they? Now I’m wondering if werewolvescan become zombies or vice versa. If they did, how could you tell? I’m going tohave to ask Colin,

1:46 - Two lizard men came in arguing, intheir language. I can’t understand a bit of it - it sounds like two frogstrying to imitate bird sounds. I’m guessing they’re arguing because of theirwild gesticulating. Flailing arms, swishing tails. The funny thing is, it’salmost soothing, like a nature sounds recording.

2:04 - Colin arrived early, and as itturns out, he can speak lizard. Apparently they’re arguing because one of themwas keeping a brood nest (?) with someone else and hadn’t mentioned it. Whenthey realized Colin was interpreting, they gave him a really dirty look, boughta bag of chips, and left. (They didn’t take their change, leaving me $2.68cents in mad money.)

2:35 - 3:17 - Fooling around with Colin.

3:19 - Colin answers my questions.Apparently werewolves can’t become zombies or vice versa; they pretty much havejust the one thing. He gave me this look like I was the idiot, but how the hellwas I supposed to know? Just about everything I know about vampires is wrong,according to him.

3:28 - The amount of trash in the parkinglot indicates the werewolves have gotten into the Dumpster again. At least Idon’t have to worry about zombie werewolves.

3:39 - 3:50 - Werewolf chasing.

4:12 - The female vampire returns. Shebuys some dental floss, and tells me next time I should recommend somewhereelse, as McDonald’s people were “too salty.“ Duly noted.

5:53 - Jorge shows up to take over themorning shift. He tells me somebody dumped a fake arm near the ice machine. Hesaid it was really gnarly looking, and maybe we should save it for Halloween. Werewolves.

The wicked stepmother, trying to get her hands on White’sconfectionary, was perfectly bitchy and witchy as well as beautiful.Susie is as thoroughly modern Snow White and incredibly likeable—also you haveto feel sorry for the completely oblivious father as a plot to kill hisdaughter unfolds.

Iadored the ‘sex god’, otherwise known as Scott. He was deliciously describedphysically and was a breath of fresh air for the heroine. He was quick thinkingand brave. And when it came to the sex scene, phew, he’s a hottie!!

I pondered this when I started reading,asking myself if it was going to work, whether jealousy would rear its uglyhead—which would be natural anyway, given that the pair have been together forsome time.

However, with theintroduction of Owen, he fits in very well—it’s almost as though, despite theduo having a very good relationship, he completes them. Owen enhances theirsound relationship. I loved the way he, at first, took their sexual experiencewith a take-it-or-leave-it air, because, after all, he’s a realist and knewfrom the start he might well just be a dalliance. That he was grounded enoughto see that and not get his hopes up was a great aspect for me, being a realistmyself.

The writing isstrong, very well done, and the voice is one that spoke to some inner part ofme, where I fell into the comfortable wording and descriptions without havingto struggle. It’s beautiful, and I look forward to more from S. Dora.

Verdict: A wonderful tale where a man jumps in withboth feet and enjoys what could be a one-night affair with no regrets and noexpectations. Even though the thought of them all being together permanently crossesOwen’s mind, he doesn’t think the offer of sex gives him the right to that. He’san exceptional man, and the maturity in him is wonderfully explored. You cansee from the way he acts he’s lived a bit, has learned a few lessons. He’slovely.

What stands outmost about this book is the wonderful Britishness and the striking voice.Elizabeth Coldwell has a way with words that feels as though someone isrelating this story to you—as though it’s an audio book playing in your mind. Ifound that fascinating, and “listening” to the nuances, the sentence patterns,and the every-so-often wonderful beat of certain lines was a total pleasure.

Drew and Alyssa arethe perfect couple for me, each wanting to explore, each, for their own reasons,with that inner voice which gives them vulnerability, making them wonder iftheir meeting is just a chance one where they’ve had a good time and then gotheir separate ways, or whether they’ve found true love and will meet again—willstay together.

With a clevernear-ending that had me guessing—will they/won’t they—Elizabeth Coldwellbrought Away From It All to a deliciousand satisfying conclusion, which had me grinning with happiness because I’dinvested a lot of interest in this couple.

Verdict: Well-written, greatvoice, great plot, very memorable characters. Yes, I recommend Away From It All—highly.

Dianadoes this, but she never comes off as loose or a free-with-her-favours tart. It’swritten in such a way that she is exploring, a somewhat uncertain,unsure-of-herself woman who is swept away by the beauty of man who seems soincredibly sincere in wanting to please her that she’s left wondering whetherhe is sincere or whether he’s pulleda fast one. She has a child to care for—she can’t afford the upset ifeverything comes crashing down.

However, Sloan islike a drug—and rightly so; he’s gorgeous—and she can’t keep away. It isn’t allabout the sex. He’s given her a new lease of life, something to look forwardto, and has opened up her mind so Diana has discovered things about herself shewasn’t aware existed until she met him.

Verdict: Very well written, very beautiful on somany levels, His Landlady is so worth the read.

After meeting at apub quiz, where the atmosphere is very well shown, as is the competitive air,Ailish and Rod get together to explore how the mind is possibly the greatestfactor in how a body responds to sex and stimuli. Ailish learns a lot, has hereyes opened—and her mind and…ahem, yes, well…—when she puts on a scientificshow with Rod.

What I liked aboutthis book was the reality that Ailish felt she had to hide her relationshipwith Rod from her friends. It was a little to do with wanting something justfor herself, I think, and a lot to do with their reactions because he’s not theusual hunk people expect someone to hook up with. He’s a geek, plain andsimple, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t full of emotion and unable to fall inlove, because, after all, he’s only human.

Their journey is alovely one, where they do a delicate dance around one another until the can’thold back any longer. Ailish discovers it doesn’t matter in the end what her friends think, and is surprisedto find they’re not as appalled by her seeing Rod as she had imagined.

Verdict: A lovely tale that deals with everydaypeople with everyday emotions. Well written, hot sex, and a theme that we allreally ought to open our minds…in more ways than one.

What a wonderfulbook to kick off my 2012 reviews. Some books stand out immediately because ofhow well-written they are, and this is one of them. A stunning mix of word constructionthat left me in awe of the author’s talent. Absolutely brilliant.

I loved this talealso because of the way Rafael made sure, before Lindsey even arrived for theweekend break, that she knew what she was doing and he knew exactly what shewanted. The way he continued to make sure she was comfortable and herthresholds were never breached (throughout the book) was also a very nicetouch. Watching Lindsey realise that although her needs were being catered toand it mattered what she wanted, that she still had a lot to learn in theLifestyle, was a joy to experience.

The sex scenes/playare something else. They get right into the heart of the matter quickly, andare fully explored to the point that I actually felt I was there. A movie-likeexperience that left me with a sense of having been pulled through a hedgebackwards at incredible speed, where I was dumped out into the open, theemotions inside of me exposed, letting the whole world know that this book wasa massive turn-on, one I hadn’t expected. I felt guilty somehow, for enjoyingthis book so much, and it led me to explore a few things about myself that Ihadn’t known existed until then. It made me think—and I love a book that doesthat.

Verdict: To sum it up, ifyou love books where it’s like you’re the heroine, where you’re forced to lookinside yourself and see whether there are untapped things about you, where you’reconstantly surprised at how words can make you feel, and on top of all that,those words are expertly written, then I very strongly recommend Three-Way Tie. It’s exceptional.
